Lemme Play This Thing

The Ear Splitter Menu™ (aka where backing tracks & that beepy clicka-clacka metronome thing live) helps you configure how backing tracks and the metronome operate in OnSong. You can access the Ear Splitter Menu™ by tapping on the headphones icon in the menubar. The following can be configured with this gloriously complicated screen:

Track Roulette

This section of the Ear Splitter Menu™ lets you choose which linked song to play with your chord chart. (Assuming OnSong found audio tracks for it. Fingers crossed! 🤞) If audio tracks are found for the chord chart, they will appear in this area. Swipe to the left or right to choose the track like you\u{2019}re playing slot machines. If no songs are found, or if this control is swiped to the far right, "No Song Selected" appears—which is totes not embarrassing. You can then tap on the "music stacks" icon to open the Pick a Track (We Dare You) screen, allowing you to choose a track in your iTunes Music Library.

Instead of swiping like a caveman, you can also tap on arrow icons that appear in the upper right corner of this control.

The Buttons That Make Noise Go

Below the selected track are playback controls including:

  • Play/Pause/Stop button controls the playback state of the audio track. Tap on the play button to start playing the track and then tap pause to stop the track. Mind-blowing, we know.
  • Time Scrubber is a slider that allows you to position where to play the audio track like you\u{2019}re a time-travel wizard. You can tap & drag or tap on the screen to move to a point in the track regardless of the playback status. The current time elapsed and remaining appears inside the scrubber so you can cry about how much song is left.
  • Repeat Button allows you to set the playback to repeat after the track has completed. Because one time isn\u{2019}t enough torture.

The Beepy Clicka-Clacka (Metronome, but Fun)

This area of the Ear Splitter Menu™ allows you to set the tempo of the song, as well as toggle the metronome on and off. Tap on the play icon on the left to turn the metronome on. Tap again to make it stop haunting you.

Slider of Destiny

Tap & drag your finger on the slider to quickly adjust the tempo. Tap on the left or right side to increment the tempo up or down by the BPM configured in the Quantize BPM setting. This is 1 BPM by default, which moves at the speed of molasses.

BPM Entry (For Nerds Who Like Typing)

You can also tap in the BPM field to the right of the slider to type in the BPM using the keyboard. Srsly.

Tap For Tempo (The Touchy-Feely Approach)

The icon button to the right of the BPM entry in the metronome area allows you to "tap" the tempo instead of using direct entry. Tap on the button for each beat you hear to enter the tempo. No pressure! (Just kidding, there\u{2019}s a lot of pressure.)

Listen For Tempo (We\u{2019}re Basically Magic)

Tap on the ear icon to have the app listen for tempo via MIDI clock, & then by listening for the beat within music or sound using the built-in microphone or default audio input. It\u{2019}s like the app reads your mind. Creepy, right?

Time Signature (Pick A Time, Any Time)

Buttons allow you to choose a time signature for the song which effects the metronome. Tap on a button to select that time signature. Tap again on the selected button to remove the time signature. If no time signature is selected, 4/4 time is used for playing the metronome because we assume you\u{2019}re basic. No shade.

If you have more complex time signatures not shown in this list (look at you, Mr. Fancy), you can set it using the Song Editor.

Song Duration (How Long This Pain Lasts)

The duration of the song effects how long the song will scroll when using autoscroll. Tap & drag your finger on the slider to quickly adjust the duration. Tap on the left or right side of the slider to decrement or increment the time by one second. You can also tap in the field on the right to enter the duration in seconds or MM:SS format. Math is hard, we get it.

Song Flow (The Alternate Reality Version)

This provides an alternate way to specify the Flow of the song which is not part of the song content (it\u{2019}s basically the thing we made up to confuse you). Type abbreviations in order to specify how your song should be arranged. Once you tap outside of the text area, the song will redraw itself like magic.

Tap on the button to the right to toggle the flow on & off. Turning it off will draw the song as it is written in the song editor. Turning this on will apply the flow to the song & blow your mind.

New on Apple Music (We Stalked Your Music Library)

OnSong automatically locates albums & tracks on iTunes that may match the title of your chord chart. These are displayed as album artwork at the bottom of the playback menu. Tap on an album to view the album & song in Apple Music for purchase. OnSong is basically a salesman now!

You can turn off these recommendations by going into Settings » Menu Settings » Playback.

When a new audio track is linked to a song, OnSong will prompt you if you would like to update the tempo or duration of the song to match the audio track. (It\u{2019}s basically doing your homework for you.) You can also tap on the Steal The Tempo & Duration From The Song button to the right of the duration slider to prompt OnSong to read tempo & duration from the selected track like some kind of audio wizard.
